Best Film Festivals in Fairfield/Litchfield Counties Connecticut

Every year, incredible film festivals and movie events are held throughout Fairfield and Litchfield counties in Connecticut. These festivals provide a great time for people of all ages. Along with several main festivals, these counties host some great movie events. At the festivals, you will view unknown work and get a sneak peek at up and coming films that will hopefully hit the big screen while the movie events typically feature current films.

Top Film Festivals

  • Berkshire International Film Festival – Celebrating its 10th year anniversary, this film festival is ranked among the best. Although people come in from all over the world, this festival is definitely a favorite among locals. The owners of this film festival bring in the best narrative, short, and documentary films coming out of Toronto and Sundance. In addition, films not submitted to those festivals are also commonly screened. This year, there is a wide variety of films from countries like Africa, Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, Mexico, and South Korea.
  • New Haven Documentary Film Festival – Another fun and exciting film festival covers short and feature documentaries submitted by high school and college students eager to show off their passion and work. Some of the topics covered in this year’s festival were Alzheimer’s, animal abuse, and rock n’ roll. Although the festival is over until next June, it is common for more than 12 films to be shown and admission is always free.

Movie Celebrations

  • Animation Celebration – Held in Fairfield County, this is one of the smaller film events but still worth seeing. The event will continue through the end of August, featuring a different animated film every Saturday.
  • Mill River Park – Although the films shown as this festival tend to lean more toward adults, there is handful of kid and teenager-friendly films as well. This event also goes through the end of August on Mill River Street in Stamford.
  • Sand Jam – This film event is laid-back and casual. Held on Jennings Beach, music is played starting at 6:30 pm, followed by movies at dusk.
  • Movies after Dark – Held in Riverside Park on select Friday nights, Hartford offers a nice selection of films for everyone
  • Beach Blanket Movies – Although this event is more of a local gathering than a full-blown festival, it is incredible fun. At Ocean Beach Park in New England, movies are played on the boardwalk every Tuesday night through August.
