It’s Unanimous: LaGuardia Airport Travel Is The Worst, And Will Be For A While
It’s no secret that New York City’s main area airports are consistently known (and ranked) as some of the most difficult by airport travelers, but most travelers know that it’s usually LaGuardia airport travel that is the worst of the three. In fact, it’s so widely regarded as the worst that Vice President Joe Biden once referred to it as “third-world country.” The Wall Street Journal has even publicly complained about it, using a hotel comparison of Denver airport being like a Hyatt and LaGuardia a one-star Holiday Inn. That was even before the most recent renovation began.
With the recent approval of the $4-5 billion overhaul of LaGuardia and complete tear-down and building of a new Terminal B, it’s no surprise that LaGuardia came in dead last on the annual airport ranking from The Points Guy. For the annual ranking of the 30 busiest US Airports, data is compiled from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, J.D. Power, Google Maps. Some of the data analyzed includes average travel time from the city center, airport amenities, typical TSA line wait time, and delays.
LaGuardia was found to have the longest average flight delays, longest drive times to the airport because of a lack of connection to a major transit hub and the most expensive parking. The renovations currently underway are hoped to address most of what makes LaGuardia the worst, with the building of a new central terminal connecting to the number 7 subway line. This renovation is definitely not a quick fix, however, as full renovations are not expected to be completed until 2021.
