Haven’t Flown in a While? Here are a few big changes you may have missed…
Even if you’ve traveled this year, it was a big year of changes in the airlines. From ticketing to baggage fees, and communicating while onboard, here’s a recap of the changes you need to know before your next flight.
Baggage Fees
Starting in August 2018, JetBlue Airways increased their baggage fees from $5 to $30 for the first bag and to $40 for the second bag. Similar increases were seen for American, Delta, United and others.
Alcoholic Drink Fees
Baggage fees are not the only fees that increased this year. Both Southwest and American Airlines increased their prices on alcoholic drinks on flights.
Ticketing Changes
More and more airlines are issuing “no frills basic economy” tickets, and unfortunately these tickets come with a lot of restrictions, including restrictions on carryon bags (not allowed at United with this type of ticket). Also restricted are seat assignments – with the basic no frills ticket you can’t select your own seat and are assigned at the last minute. So, if you’re planning on sitting together you will be out of luck with this type of ticket.
The Good News…
It’s not all bad, though. Some airlines are now offering free in-flight entertainment. JetBlue has always offered this perk, but now more carriers are offering this perk, either on seatback screens or on traveler devices (such as ipads, phones, and laptops).
Some airlines also offering free messaging via Facebook, iMessage and WhatsApp so you can communicate while on your flight.
The bottom line? If you haven’t flown in a while, check your airline’s website for restrictions (and perks) that may have changed since the last time you traveled with them.
